My New and Improved Goals for 2020

I had originally planned on sharing a blog post at the start of the year detailing all of my goals for 2020 and my perfect plan to execute them throughout the year. I had gone through a really intensive process to outline each goal and the steps needed to complete them during December of last year in preparation for January 1st. My goals were lofty, my timeline was strict, and I thought I was ready to tackle anything. But if you read my previous blog post, you know that things haven’t been working out according to plan. If the corona virus has taught me anything, it’s that life is truly unpredictable. So I have taken some time to reevaluate my goals and decide on what is really important to me. I have chosen to remove most of my deadlines, lighten up on some of the more difficult tasks, and I feel a lot better about my goals in general. Read on if you are interested in finding out what my goals for the rest of year are!

Below I have broken down my goals into six different categories. I have five main priorities: Korean (language), Health, Career, Relationships, and Home & Finances. I also have a few other goals that didn’t quite fit in with any particular priority, so I’ve lumped them together into one “other,” or “life administration,” category.

Korean

I’ve been studying Korean off and on for the past 6 or so years and I’d really like to switch back to “on” this year. I have been steadily collecting textbooks and smart phone apps without taking any time to actually work through them. It’s been a long time since I’ve felt that I’ve made any noticeable progress so I’m hoping that committing to completing a number of resources will give me not only a sense of accomplishment but also a boost in my skills.

Goals for My Korean Language Study:
  • Finish using the TTMIK 100-Day Study Journal
  • Participate in and complete one Instagram study challenge
  • Finish 3 Korean apps
  • Finish 3 Korean textbooks
  • Make some major progress on TTMIK and CUK courses
  • Finish Duolingo’s Korean course

Health

Since I’m now getting married in October I’ve allowed myself to push the timeline for my weight loss until then. This is the only goal with a deadline besides the implied “do-it-before-2021” deadline that the rest of my goals have. I am the kind of person that hates getting checkups even though I know I need one and I will continually put them off, sometimes for years, so I’m going to try to get some checkups under my belt this year. Also, as you may already know, I sometimes deal with mild anxiety, so I bought an anxiety journal to use as a coping strategy, but I haven’t spent much time writing in it. I’d like to fill in the remaining prompts by the end of the year.

Goals for My Health:
  • Lose 10 kilograms by October
  • Get all of my overdue checkups done and some treatment for additional issues.
  • Finish the anxiety journal.

Career

Currently, I work as an English teacher at a public school in South Korea, but truth be told, it is not my dream job. I am glad I have a steady income, health insurance, and some job security, but I’d rather not do this for the rest of my life. I don’t currently monetize any of my online presence, but if I can start posting content consistently and generate a larger audience, then I can consider that as a possibility in the future. There are so many different possible career paths, so I need to spend some time brainstorming and considering the different options that I have besides just teaching English.

Goals for My Career:
  • Design and publish 3 printables
  • Finish developing a home binder
  • Reach 10k subscribers on Youtube
  • Reach 1k followers on Instagram
  • Reach 1k followers on WordPress
  • Make a list of dream careers and flesh them out through journaling

Relationships

My fiance is my best friend and my partner in life, but I still feel lonely at times. My family lives half a world away and many of my friends have left Korea or plan to leave soon. I try to keep in touch with loved ones when I can, but there is nothing like having good and true friends to share your life with in person. I’ve watched my friend group dwindle each year, but haven’t made any lasting effort to make new friendships so I’d like to change that this year. And I have found that days where I reach out to loved ones via social media feel a little less lonely so I’d like to make it a daily habit.

My Goals for my Relationships:
  • Join 1 meetup/event to meet new people
  • Talk to one person I love every day
  • Make one new IRL friend

Home & Finances

Wedding or not, in about a week my fiance will become my husband and our married life will officially begin. We still have some major wedding related expenses to cover so I know it will be difficult to keep a stable budget, but I’d like to start preparing our financial futures by opening a savings account and testing out some different budgeting techniques to find one that works for us. And even though we both work full time, I prefer to do the housekeeping and feel accomplished when I do, but without a schedule I’m finding it difficult to stay on top of chores, so I’ll also be experimenting with different cleaning schedules this year.

Goals for Our Home & Finances:
  • Finish paying Korean wedding costs
  • Open a savings account
  • Test out a household budget
  • Develop a weekly cleaning schedule.

Other / Life Admin

Here are a few more goals that didn’t quite fit into any of the other categories outlined above. I am trying to read more, streamline my digital experiences, and document my life in meaningful ways. I might come up with more ideas as time goes on, but these will do for now.

Other Goals:
  • Read 24 books
  • Delete my old email account
  • Optimize my inboxes (organize important emails, unsubscribe, inbox to zero)
  • Optimize my cellphone (organize photos, delete useless/rarely used apps, learn to utilize all the settings and functions)
  • Finish (fill up) my current bullet journal
  • Write a diary every day

Now that I have reevaluated my goals and updated them for my current life circumstances, I feel much more motivated and at peace with what I have decided to accomplish for 2020. I hope you have found the explanation of my thought-process and goals lists helpful or inspiring! Please let me know about some of your goals for 2020 in the comments below!
